The film history class that I’m teaching at a local college is arranged, roughly, chronologically, so we started back in late August with the works of W.K.L. Dickson and the Lumière Brothers. By this point in the semester, we’ve reached the mid-1920s, quite possibly the single most exciting era in film history.

The gleeful overacting of every one of this scene’s performers, along with the preposterousness of the notion of an all-spatula emporium, are what my friends and I loved about this scene — and what I still love about it now. If one or more of my dorky friends and I ever found ourselves in a kitchen, it was a solid bet that one of us would ask the other, “Honey, where’s the spatula?” (I had forgotten the bit in which the putative owner of Spatula City stiltedly interrupts the festivities to read a few lines, with intentional awkwardness, from a cue card.
